The name liposome is derived from the two Greek words ‘lipos,’ meaning fat, and ‘soma,’ meaning body. Liposomes are a revolutionary way of encapsulating active ingredients in a phospholipid “bubble” to protect and deliver them directly to the cells of your tissues, which are reached via the bloodstream.
Liposomes can transport active ingredients to their desired location and increase the bioavailability of ingredients in the body. This affects the liposomal protection of the active substance against degradation as it passes through the stomach and intestine. Liposomes protect ingredients from digestion. As they are composed of phospholipids that are very similar to the membrane of every cell in our body, they are seen as native and are not filtered out by the liver, which released them intact into the bloodstream where they dissolve after a few hours and release the payload where it can be taken up by cells.
They have the unique ability to hold active substances – including medicines and supplements – both in their aqueous interior as well as their lipid bilayer. This makes liposomes attractive as both a pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical drug delivery system.
